The Soundtrack of My Life
64Everyone has favorite songs. Can you remember the music you heard during all the changes of your life. Let me share the ones I can remember with you.
My earliest memory is hearing "Blue Velvet" by Bobby Vinton on the radio. This was probably in 1963. The next song that sticks in my mind was hearing "I Want To Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles on my 3rd birthday (This was the beginning of my love for the Beatles). This was the beginning of my love for music.
The Summer of Love (1967) brought not only first grade but the San Francisco Sound. When I started school the song was "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison and "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly in 1968. This was also when I got my first set of drums. The next big thing in my life was my first kiss. The little girl's name was Dena and the song was "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch" by the Four Tops.
Another big memory coming in 1970 in the park on a summer day, listening to the radio, I heard about the breakup of the Beatles. The song was "Let It Be". It seems that in the park during summer over the years I associate with lots of songs, such as....."Saturday In the Park" by Chicago, "Freebird" by Lynard Skynard, "Do You Feel Like We Do?" by Peter Frampton, "Feels Like The First Time" by Foriegner.
By 1979 came my first wife and "I Can't Tell You Why" by the Eagles. When times were good, it was songs like "Heart of Glass" by Blondie, "Pop Musik" by M, and "Cars" by Gary Newman. In 1981 my daughter was born. The song that sends back there is "In The Air Tonight" by Phil Collins. In 1983 my son Sean was born. His song is "Beautiful Boy" by John Lennon (I named my son after John Lennon's son) .
Through the years songs like "Suddenly Last Summer" by the Motels, "Can't Fight This Feeling" by REO Speed Wagon, "Damn Good" by David Lee Roth and "Breakout" by Swing Out Sister permeated the airwaves.
In 1992, my marriage was over. The songs that mark this occassion were songs I listened to on vinyl from happier times gone by like "Drive" by the Cars and "Please Don't Go" by KC and the Sunshine Band.
I met my and married my second wife in 1993. The songs I remember are "Starting Over" by John Lennon and "So Bad" by Paul McCartney. Sadly, 5 years later, because of an extremely unruly stepchild and my wife's denial of the problem, this marriage ended.
The next year I met my present wife and a blast from the past was "Brown Eyed Girl". I took this to be an omen of good luck. This same year my first granddaughter was born. The songs were the Beatle songs I sang to her (She's 10 now and the Beatles are her favorite). My two children are grown, my daughter has four children, my son is in Iraq, my stepdaughter has two children and my stepson has one. I'm an oldie but a goodie and still rockin' on!
